Speaking Up for Accountability and Opportunity in Addressing Homelessness

ree

Last night, I spoke during the public comments portion of the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting to share an idea that has come up again and again while talking with residents across Ward 9.

People care deeply about how the city addresses homelessness, but many have told me they want to see more accountability built into those efforts. The message is clear: when individuals are receiving assistance and are able to work, they should have opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways that also benefit our community.

During my remarks, I shared information about a successful initiative from Albuquerque, New Mexico called “There’s a Better Way” and its follow-up program “A Better Way Forward”.

These programs connect people experiencing homelessness with short-term, paid work opportunities such as cleanup and beautification projects while linking them to job placement, housing, and mental-health services. The results have been encouraging, helping participants earn honest pay, build employment history, and start rebuilding their lives.

I believe Manchester can take inspiration from this model and create a similar program that promotes both compassion and responsibility. It is an approach that gives people a chance to work, contribute, and move forward while improving the quality of life for everyone in our city.

This conversation is an important first step in exploring practical, results-driven solutions to one of our city’s toughest challenges. By working together and focusing on approaches that have proven successful elsewhere, we can show that Manchester is truly guided by values and focused on outcomes that make a lasting difference for our community.
