šĀ While out campaigning today, I stopped in at the FW Webb Store in Ward 9 and spoke with Store Manager Johnny SmithĀ and Operations Manager Alan Gabris. Their business is located directly across from the 39 Beech St. shelter, and they shared some serious concerns with me.
Ā
š°Ā Since the shelter opened, they have had to absorb massive new costs in security. š« Trespassing, šĀ discarded needles, and š» instances of urination and defecation on their property have become regular problems. ā ļøĀ Tragically, one person even lost their life on their property. Their security staff also noted that a whole new group of individuals has recently appeared around the shelter.
Ā
āĀ Johnny and Alan told me they had heard the shelter might eventually be phased out, but no one from the city or their sitting alderman ever reached out to give them the facts. I was able to share the details with them directly. They expressed relief when I informed them that the new shelter would not be located as close to residential homes, since that had been one of their biggest concerns. Businesses across our city deserve transparency and communication on issues that impact them this significantly.
Ā
š§ They also described the disruption caused by last minute notices of water shutoffs for preparation work related to the cityās $365M Cemetery Brook Drain Tunnel Project. They even rented portable toilets š½ to prepare, only to find their water was never turned off. On top of that, they still do not have clear details about how or when this major project will affect them, even though it will be going directly through their property. These kinds of communication breakdowns put unnecessary strain on businesses that are already dealing with so much.
Ā
š¢Ā FW Webb is not only a valued local employer, but also a trusted supplier of plumbing, heating, HVAC, and industrial products. If you are in need of their services, stop by their Manchester location at 34 Beech Street, Manchester, NH 03103-5612Ā and support a business that continues to invest in our community despite these challenges.
Ā
ā Ā As your Alderman, I will make sure local businesses are not left in the dark. When city projects or policies affect them, they should hear about it early, clearly, and directly. That is part of accountability and transparency, values I will bring to City Hall. šļø
